The F1 Weekend in Austin, If You Live Here (2026)
The weekend, in one paragraph
Practice is Friday, October 23. Qualifying is Saturday, October 24. The race is Sunday, October 25, scheduled for 3 p.m. Central at Circuit of the Americas, 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd, Del Valle (Austin address, 78617). It is not a sprint weekend this year. A race ticket is also the concert ticket: Maroon 5 on Friday and Post Malone on Saturday at the Super Stage, Alesso after the race on Sunday. No race ticket, no concert.

Who feels the traffic
COTA sits southeast of town, closer to the airport than to downtown. Two roads do almost all the work: SH-130 at Exit 451 (Elroy Road) and Exit 453 (FM 812), plus TX-71 from Bastrop and from Austin. Sunday midday is the bad window. If you live in Del Valle, Creedmoor, Mustang Ridge, southeast Austin, or the east side of Buda, do the grocery run Friday morning. Kyle and Buda will feel I-35 and 1626 as people cut over from the south.
Downtown is not gridlocked all weekend, but the official shuttle loads at Waterloo Park, so expect extra rideshare traffic around Moody Amphitheater on race morning. Last inbound shuttle buses have run early afternoon on Sundays in past years. Do not count on a 1 p.m. bus.
If you are going, and you do not want to drive it
The circuit shuttle from Waterloo Park (Moody Amphitheater) drops at the Grand Plaza gate and is the least painful legal option. Parking at COTA is pre-purchased by lot. Do not plan on buying a pass at the gate. Rideshare drop-off on Sunday can look cheap until the return surge after the race and the concert. Leave a buffer if you have a dog, a flight, or a kid who has to be somewhere at 6.
If you are not going, watch it somewhere with a screen
You do not need a ticket to watch the race. You do need a plan, because the good rooms fill up. Call Friday. A few that already work for game day:
- The Victory Tap, 111 E Main St, Pflugerville. Downtown, lots of TVs, easier than driving toward the track.
- The Rock Sports Bar, 205 N Mays St, Round Rock. NFL Sunday Ticket room that will have the race if you ask.
- Mister Tramps, 8565 Research Blvd, Austin. North Austin default. Far enough from COTA that the drive home is normal.
- Buck’s Backyard, 1750 S FM 1626, Buda. The south-side option if you want a patio and you are already staying off I-35.
- Game On Bar & Grill, 15609 Ronald Reagan Blvd, Leander. The big screen, if the north suburbs are where you are anyway.
Skip driving to a southeast Austin bar “to be close to the track.” You will sit in the same exit queue as the people with tickets, without a seat.
What is still a good idea that weekend
Saturday morning in Kyle or Buda, before qualifying traffic builds. Center Street Trick-or-Treat in Kyle is the same Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, and it will be done before the bad roads fill up.
Leander’s Tricks and Treats Spooktacular is also Saturday night. It is the opposite direction from COTA. That is the point.
Sunday in Lakeway, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, or Georgetown is a normal Sunday. The mess is southeast. Use the weekend for the Halloween events on the other side of the metro, not for a spontaneous drive down 71.
A short don’t list
Do not promise a client a Sunday afternoon showing in Del Valle, Hornsby Bend, or along FM 812. Move it to Monday.
Do not fly into Austin after 11 a.m. Sunday and expect a fast ride to a southeast listing. The airport is on the same side of town as the track.
Do not list the concerts as a free night out. Maroon 5 and Post Malone are inside the circuit.
Closing line: F1 weekend is a good weekend to be a local, if you stay on your side of town. Watch the race somewhere with a screen. Take the kids to the Halloween event in your city. Leave SH-130 to the people who paid for the parking pass.
